Gunther Plüschow had become famous as the 'Dragon Pilot' having escaped from a the colony of Tsingtao (modern Qingdao) and travelled across the Pacific, before crossing America. Here he caught a steamer to neutral Italy, but was captured at Gibraltar by the Royal Navy. Eventually identified he was sent to Donington Hall, Derbyshire. His only desire was to escape.

ESCAPE FROM BRITAIN
Scotland Yard
Basil Thomson of Scotland Yard, the Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police was given the task of recapturing escaped Prisoners of War. This prisoner was special. He was a propaganda coup for the enemy: Imperial Germany if he managed to get home.
Thomson's and his detectives are quickly on the track of both escapees, because Plüschow hadn't escaped alone! For the first time, I tell the story of his fellow escapee, Oskar Trefftz, who was related to one of the largest sugar producers in Britain, and had British cousins.
The book is set in a world where German families driven into poverty by having their men interned were forced into the dark world of London crime.
